Specifications

You may have had to deal with different kinds of differences arising from the same documents that were re-obtained for different purposes. Increasingly, such differencies appear not only in certificates, but also in passports or other documents of Ukrainian citizens, from which the writing of one's own name or surname follows in different ways. Timely detection and resolution of this problem will avoid major problems in the future regarding the resolution of certain notarial cases (for example, to prove family ties in the registration of inheritance, etc.), or in the preparation of documents for foreign institutions.

This kind of consensus occurs with such names as Anna-Hanna, Liuba-Liubov, and others.

Sometimes differences arise in the transliteration of names in Latin (such as Nataliya-Nataliia, Mariya-Mariia, etc.). In this case, the reason may be a change in the official transliteration. Surnames are often written differently, especially if there are several documents, some published in Ukrainian, others in Russian.

What to do if differences in writing your documents are not accepted, and the re-issuing of the document is not possible?

To avoid such situations, you need to establish the identity of a name, surname or first name.

To resolve such differences and avoid problems when submitting documents to official institutions, the Ukrainian Bureau of Linguistic Sciences of Ukraine is called upon to establish the identity of proper names. This Bureau was established in 2005 for the purpose of conducting examinations of various profiles. The Bureau carries out research, codification, information and consulting activities in legal linguistics and linguistic expertise.

The Bureau of Linguistic Expertise issues a reasoned opinion in which:

- establishes the identity of surnames, names and other proper names that differ in spelling, grammatical or structural features;

- establishes the identity of surnames, names and other proper names written in different languages, etc.

In case of detection of incorrect writing - documents can be replaced (for example, if you have passports or certificates issued by the Registry Office). If the documents are old enough and can not be amended - the solution to this issue is a linguistic examination.
